
What does Ayurveda mean?
The Sanskrit word ayu means ‘life’ and veda means ‘knowledge’ or ‘science’. Literally translated it means the science of life, or knowledge of living, or simply the art of longevity.
What is Ayurveda, and where does it come from?
Ayurveda is a natural healing system that originated in India, one of the oldest in the world. It dates back to around 3 000 – 5 000 BCE, as long as yoga has been in existence. Both are integrative healing therapies and are mutually complementary.
What is the objective of Ayurveda, and why should I use it?
Ayurveda provides life-style recommendations for health, longevity, and disease-prevention, with special methods for the rejuvenation of both body and mind.
It guides every individual in the proper choice of diet, living habits and exercise in order to restore balance in the body, mind and consciousness, thus preventing disease.
Ayurveda assists to increase our life-span and improve our quality of life. Its objective is to maintain optimum wellbeing of the healthy person, and to prevent or cure disease in the unhealthy person, through proper diet, lifestyle herbal medicines, dietetics, psychology and panchakarma.
All aspects of medicine are addressed in Ayurveda, including diet, herbs, drugs, body work, surgery. Ayurveda has its own special clinical procedures, such as panchakarma (a cleansing and detoxification programme).
Ayurveda also embraces and integrates with the practices of Yoga, from asana and pranayama to mantra and meditation, as part of its healing tools.
